Finally the Spring weather is arriving in our little part of Ontario (and boy is it ever taking it’s time!) and with it the promise of warm sunny days, spring flowers and shedding those heavy winter layers.
This time of year is usually a bit of a slower time for crocheters, as people start looking forward to putting away those hats, mittens and other winter accessories. This year, however, that morning chill is still hanging on and the evenings are still quite cool, so I still reach for a light scarf or wrap most days. My Tidal Waves Scarflette is the perfect spring/summer accessory. It’s not too bulky, works up in a flash, and looks great!
This lightweight, breezy scarf was made on my return trip from vacationing in beautiful Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia. While I was there, I visited the LYS in town and immediately fell in love with this beautiful yarn, which was custom dyed exclusively for that shop by a dyer who just happens to live not that far from me in Ontario. Between the absolutely stunning colours and the really cool Nova Scotia-Ontario connection, I thought this yarn was the perfect souvenir of our trip, and I immediately set about making myself an accessory that would capture the essence of the relaxed seaside living we enjoyed on our vacation.
I am in love with the changing tides, and the variation in textures is meant to represent the ocean’s many different moods, from smooth seas to choppy waves. While this was designed specifically for this yarn and colourway, it looks great in any sock weight or fingering yarn, or can be made into a large, plush winter scarf by using a thicker yarn and larger hook.
This pattern is perfect for the adventurous beginner who wants to learn some new stitches, or more advanced crocheters looking for something a little different to work on in the summer months. Since they work up quickly, these scarves are perfect for last minute gifts, selling at markets, or whipping up on a road trip like I did!
